(Education Centre Madre Teodora)

History

SIPEB – Association of Popular and Charity Instruction was founded on June 16th, 1911 and maintains the Mother Teodora Education Center. However, its origin dates from the 19th century by the work of St. Joseph’s Sisters of Chambéry (France), state of São Paulo.

The Congregation of St. Joseph’s Sisters of Chambéry started its activities in Brazil in 1858. A Sisters group were convened in 1858 at the request of the then Bishop of São Paulo, Dom Antônio Joaquim de Mello, settling in Itu city, São Paulo. The following year, Sister Maria Theodora Voiron arrived, and would dedicate her entire life to social work and education, being the founder of SIPEB too.

On November 13th, 1859, Sisters started their activities in Our Lady of Patrocínio School, with service educational by an management of boarding school and day school for girls. Soon, Mother Teodora opened a room in school for slaves’ daughters.

SIPEB maintained since its foundation in 1911, the Our Lady of Patrocínio School, famous by be the first school for girls in the state of São Paulo. As time passes and with the social and cultural transformations, it decided to close the school in 1971, preserving the work of social promotion. The job assistance for the most needy always was a preoccupation of Sisters of St. Joseph.

On November 1963 they founded the Josefino House in Rancho Grande district, suburbs of Itu. The House served girls that couldn’t continue their studies besides primary education. This work was developed until 1965.

At the same time the reality showed that the boys had more necessity of relief. Then was founded the Boy’s House in a room of Our Lady Patrocínio School on February 3rd, 1967. As time passes, by necessity they started to serve boys and girls.

In 2002, the name of the House changed to Mother Teodora Education Center in honor of the great missionary of Brazil. The Mother Teodora Education Center serves an annual average of 220 children and/or young people of 1st to 4th grade in the Happy Child Project and has 160 families in the Project.

Citizen Family

In the Happy Child Project the Mother Teodora Education Center serves children and young people in a situation of risk or social vulnerability, affected by unemployment and others socio-relatives problems. These children live in different suburbs of Itu and frequent the Project in alternative periods to school. Our goal is to prevent and avoid the endurance in the streets, offering 2 daily meals for each children in the morning and in the afternoon, with activities that aim develop the integral education for children, like: pedagogical complementation, hygiene and health promotion, lecture and search at library, arts, toys, tours, educative videos, exercises for education of responsible liberty and of citizenship, sport and leisure, taekwondo, psychological duty, dances and choreographies, relaxing activities, dramatization, scavenger hunt, games and tourneys, handicraft, activities with scrap metal and recycling, digital beginning, draw classroom, folding, environmental education and guitar classroom.

Citizen Family Project serves families with problems of habitation, alimentation, unemployment, family dissolution, family income not enough and lack of documentation. The attendance to the families is through meetings of participation, information and education, socio-psycho-pedagogical, individual attendance and donations according to their necessities (medicines, food stamps, scholar material, clothes, shoes, blankets, build material, etc.)

Mother Teodora Education Center wants to encourage people to extend their worldview and develop entrepreneur and innovative attitudes through a process of educational complementation in touch with the pillars of education of 21st century.
